Technology has forever changed not only what we need to learn but the way we learn. The class that I engaged in and which is the basis of this reflective post is Educational Technology. Throughout this course, students were provided with numerous activities designed to help improve one’s ability to use advanced technology. It requires students to work collaboratively with each other when doing presentations and to produce various types of assignments. It also requires students to be responsible and take responsibility for their own learning especially when using Schoology to read the various articles. I have learnt a plethora of ideas for integrating technology into the classroom using interactive powerpoint, digital story and more. I believe that it is important to use these tools in my lessons. However, some of the content and tools were reintroduced during this course and I therefore re-learnt how to use and maximise them.
The ISTE is an organization that helps to improve teaching, learning and leadership by utilizing technology through professional development opportunities. As technology integration continues to increase in our society, it is paramount that teachers possess the skills and behaviours of digital age professionals. I have seen some positive correlation between what was assigned to us as tasks and what was set out to be achieved by our lecturer. The instructor designed learning tools which promoted learning and creativity and these were evident in the assignments given. Blogs, Wiki, Xtranormal, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Publisher were some of the tools used to promote creativity and inspire learning. These tools allows student to think creativity, foster information and decision making. Now I am more adept with digital age learning and assessments because I am able to design blogs, wiki, website and more. Therefore, I utilize multiple online tools for communications and build simple online assessments. However, I was unable to assess my own progress because it was determined by the grades assigned by the lecturer. If we were given reflections (and not one reflection) to write about the course’s progress and our feelings towards it, then we would have been able to assess our individual progress. The goal of the teacher is to collaborate, communicate and model the importance of technology to the students, parents and staff. Throughout the course the lecturer had the students participating in online discussions on Schoology which had the students collaborating and communicating via the internet. This course has demonstrated and model digital citizenship and responsibility. I think that it is important to inform students on how to use the internet and other tools responsibility. I do understand the relevance of new technology in the world and how ethically and legally to use them. I am comfortable modelling digital etiquette and responsible social interaction. Utilizing these various tools I have become technologically savvy. I have integrated the use of technology in my classroom and I am confident in my abilities that I can and will teach students and other teachers about the different tools that I have learnt to utilize in my lesson.
